Noted events in his life were:

• Biographical. Isaac D. Eavey

On section 11, Leaf River Township, resides an old pioneer of 1849, a gentleman who, since his advent to Ogle County, has been closely connected with its agricultural advancement, and whose prosperity is due to his own individual exertions. The gentleman referred to is Isaac D. Eavey, born in Washington County, Maryland, November 9, 1811. His father, Christian Eavey, was likewise a native of Washington County, and of German ancestry. The maiden name of his wife was Susan Duble, who was also born in Washington County, Maryland. Christian Eavey spent his entire life in his native county, engaged in the calling of an agriculturist. His wife came to the county after his death, and lived with her son George until her demise.

The subject of this notice grew to manhood in his native county; there acquired a good education in the subscription schools, and lived with his parents, assisting in the labors of the farm until the year 1836. January 1st, of that year he united his destiny with that of Miss Caroline T. Hammond. She was born in Frederick County, Maryland, February 3, 1821, and is a daughter of Johnzy and Elizabeth (Schrader) Hammond. Her father was born in England and emigrated to this country while a young man; her mother was born in Washington County, Maryland. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Eavey settled on the old homestead in Maryland, which they cultivated until 1839. During this year he started with his wife, her mother and a colored servant, to Fairfield County, Ohio. In 1840, hearing such glowing accounts of the rich and productive prairie land of Illinois, especially Ogle County, he concluded to make his future home there. He accordingly hitched up, and once more depositing his worldly effects in his covered wagon, started for the New Eldorado. Previous to this however, he had visited this county to investigate the reports which he had heard, and returned to Ohio, making the round trip on horseback. On his arrival here, he purchased a claim in what is now Leaf River Township, about one mile east of his present residence, and he and his family moved into a little log cabin, where they remained until the following summer, when he erected a more substantial and prepossessing residence, but the reader must not for a moment suppose that the front, or even any portion of it, was composed of fine pressed brick, for it was only a log house after all, and yet in those times it years, when he sold it and purchased the place he now owns and occupies. There was a small frame house, with a basement, on the place at the time he purchased it, and in this the family lived until he erected the frame residence in which he is now living. His land is under an advanced sate of cultivation, and he is meeting with that success which homestead toil and energetic effort are sure to bring.

The union of Mr. and Mrs. Eavey was blessed by the birth of 13 children, and the household saddened by the death of eight: Margaret is the wife of J. Heistand, who lives at adeline; Melinda became the wife of Watson Webster and is living with him at Clarinda, Page County, Iowa; he was a member of the State Legislature and died while serving his second term; Denton H. is the next in order of birth; Sarah married Joseph Kuntzelman, who is a resident of Leaf River Township; Luella lives at home; Denton H. Manages the farm, and selected for his companion in life Miss Maria Mattison. Mr. and Mrs. Eavey in their religious belief are strong supporters of the doctrines of the United Brethren Church.

• Census: 1860, Leaf River Township, Ogle County, Illinois. Isaac was 48 year old.

• Census: 1880, Leaf River Township, Ogle County, Illinois. Isaac was 68 year old when the census was taken.

Isaac married Caroline T. Hammond, daughter of Johnzy Hammond and Elizabeth Schrader, on 1 Jun 1837 in Maryland. Caroline was born on 3 Feb 1821 in New Windsor, Frederick County, Maryland, died on 22 Dec 1908 in Leaf River Township, Ogle County, Illinois at age 87, and was buried in 1908 in Egan Cemetery, Leaf River, Ogle County, Illinois. Another name for Caroline was Caroline Avy.

Noted events in her life were:

• Census: 1850, Leaf River Township, Ogle County, Illinois. Caroline Avy was 29 year old at the time of the Census.

• Census: 1880, Leaf River Township, Ogle County, Illinois. Caroline was 58 year old when the census was taken.

• Obituary: 1908, Leaf River Township, Ogle County, Illinois. Death of one of the Earliest Pioneers of the town of Leaf River (handwritten 1908)
Caroline T. (Hammond) Eavey was born February 3, 1821 at New Windsor, Maryland, and died at her home in Leaf River, Tuesday, December 22, 1908, aged 87 years, 10 months, 19 days.
She was married to Isaac D. Eavey June 1, 1837. To this union were born 13 children, of whom four daughters remain to mourn the loss of a fine and devoted mother.
Mr. and Mrs. Eavey came to the town of Leaf River in the spring of 1840, and settled on what is known as the old Rhinehart place near Egan. Their home has ever since been in this vicinity.
Mr. Eavey died August 30, 1889, and the family soon removed to the village of Leaf River. Mrs. Eavey was the oldest person in the town and nearly the oldest settler. We learn of but one, Mr. Horatio Wagner, who came her in 1838, two years prior to the coming of Mr. Eavey, that is an older settler and is still living in our town.
What an eventful life these old settlers have passed through! The changes that have taken place in this town during their seventy years of occupation must to them seem wonderful. (offered by Thelma Thomas Livingston/Carole Ann Heller)

Mrs. Caroline T. Eavey, nee Hammond, was born February 3, 1821 at New Windsor, Maryland, and died at Leaf River, Illinois, December 22, 1908. She was married to Isaac D. Eavey, June 1, 1837. They came to Illinois in 1840, locating on a farm north of Leaf River, where Mr. Eavey died August 30, 1889. Soon after she moved to Leaf River. Of the thirteen children born to them only five lived to maturity, of whom four daughters, with seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren survive. She was converted under Freewill Baptist preaching, and joined the United Brethren Church before there were school-houses or churches in which to preach. She was a member of Otterbein class and the W.M.A. as long as we had a society there. By her Christ-like spirit, her patience in suffering, and her interest in others she drew all to her. Nellie C. The Cass News, September 15, 1899

Death’s Doings
J. D. Eavey, who for so many years has been a citizen of Harrisonville, died at his home on South Independence St., on Sept. 2, 1899. He was born in Hagerstown, Maryland, April 21, 1818. He resided in the east until after his marriage to Miss Margaret Weast, to whom he was united in 1847. Of the twelve children born to them only six survive the aged father. Mr. Eavy has made his home in Cass County since the early ‘60’s and a greater part of the time has resided in Harrisonville where he had many warm friends. A few years ago he built the nice residence which was his home at the time of his death. Here he and his wife and youngest daughter spent a few happy years but the Grim Reaper has claimed the three leaving no trace of the former household. God grant that the firesides with the many vacant chairs may be made complete around His throne in heaven.
