When they came home they had money, something very few people had in those days. They bought Grandpa a cook stove. No one had ever had one until then. Grandpa said that they could not bring "that thing" in the house. He wanted to see the fire, not to send it up the chimney. So they built a log cabin in the yard to cook in and sat out there and had spring water sent to the door. This all happened before my time, so it is "handed down" history, but I DO remember the log cabin kitchen. All they had to do was chop down a few trees and drag them to the saw mill. The owner cut them in slabs and took his pay in logs. There was no money needed. The had none if it was. They were yard hard time, but I never heard anyone starving."
