Mr. Bales was born July 16, 1927, in Bonilla, S.D. He served in the U.S. Navy and the Naval Reserve. He married Jacquelyn Hansen in 1951. A carpenter, he worked for Lefholtz Construction Co. in Palo Alto, Calif., for more than 25 years. He lived in Forest Grove since 1990 and was a Methodist.
Survivors include his wife; sons, Douglas of McMinnville and Charles of Union City, Calif.; daughters, Carrie of Cornelius and Patty Nelson of Hillsboro; brothers, Robert of Federal Way, Wash., Stanley of Arkansas and Clayton of Florida; and seven grandchildren.
Private interment will be in South Dakota. The family suggests remembrances to the American Diabetes Association.

BALES, Douglas Lee - Age 48 of Mukilteo, Washington died April 25, 2001 at his home. Mr. Bales was born November 19, 1952 in Huron, SD, a son of Marvin and Jackie Bales. He was raised in Cupertino, Califonia. Doug worked as a building official in Oregon for the City of Forest Grove, City of Brookings and Douglas County before moving to Washington in May of 2000 to work as a building supervisor for the City of Bellevue. He was musically gifted and enjoyed sharing his talent and love of music with others. Survivors include his financee Shirley Smith and her son Trevor of Mukilteo, WA; his mother Jackie Bales of Beaverton; two sisters, Patty Nelson and Carrie Bales, both of Hillsboro and a brother Chuck of Union City, CA. He was preceded in death by his father, Marvin Bales of Forest Grove. A memorial service will be held Friday, May 4, beginning at 1 p.m. at Evergreen Christian Center, 4400 NW Glencoe Rd, Hillsboro, OR 97124. Friends are invited to join the family at a reception immediatley following the service in the Fellowship Hall. Former Cupertino resident, Douglas Lee Bales, 48, died on April 25 at his home in Mukilteo, Wash. Bales, born Nov. 19, 1952, in Huron, SD.., was raised in Cupertino and graduated from Cupertino High School. Bales was musically gifted and enjoyed sharing his talent and love of music with others.
Bales worked as a building official in Oregon for the cities of Forest Grove and Brookings, and Douglas County before moving to Washington in May 2000, to work as a building supervisor for the city of Bellevue.
Bales is survived by his fiancιe, Shirley Smith of Mukilteo; his mother, Jackie Bales of Beaverton, Ore.; sisters Patty Nelson and Carrie Bales of Hillsboro, Ore.; and brother Chuck Bales of Union City. A memorial service was held on May 4, at Evergreen Christian Center in Hillsboro, Ore. Memorial contributions may be sent to the American Heart Association.
